- This afternoon you are going to watch a mechanized combat
team conducting a hasty attack against a small enemy
position.
The Brigade is running the Combat Team Commanders course.
They’re training some of our majors in how to conduct
combined operations combat team attacks.
- The soldiers and tanks will be moving eastwards…
This time in 2012, it’s very different.
We've used a brigade 1 CMBG to be the over arching brigade
element to support the course.
It's proving to be extremely effective.
The young majors and captains on this course, if you
imagine that they are either just about to take command or
just in command of their squadrons companies and batteries.
Its a huge experience for them to come out into the field
in the Wainwright training area command combat teams
beneath two battle groups the Strathcona and the 2 PPCLI
Battle Group underneath a working living viable brigade
headquarters.
That has never been done before.

For mark, this phase will begin by brigade recce conducting
a faint to the south…
Hasty attacks are all based on something we call in the
army the combat estimate.
We have a series of six elements you look at in order to
make your decision quickly and effectively so you look at
things like the situation of your friendly forces so what
forces you have at you disposal, what the enemy situation
is like and most importantly what the ground is like.
So you let the ground define where you’re going to go.
In the last five years, we've had three in Wainwright and
two in Gagetown.
From my own perspective, there is no comparison.
Wainwright is a much larger area from a manoeuvre
perspective.
It is much better.
It affords the planners and the people executing the
missions, a lot manoeuvre space to execute those missions.
It’s a much better training area and I think it’s proved
very worth while to have them here.
