Expired food or clothes that no longer fit may be thrown
away, but when it comes to ammunition disposal, well,
it's a blast.
- Three, two, one.
Ammo Platoon this week is disposing of surplus,
deteriorated and damaged ammunition and the reason why
we're doing it, is basically to ensure that all the
ammunition that's unsafe or unstable is disposed of.
We try to conduct this at least once a year.
We dispose of day and night flares, also we're disposing
of the Eryx missiles.
They're basically obsolete now.
And also, we dispose of damaged ammunition that we sent in
through inspection saying that it's damaged, it's no good
for service anymore.
Right now we have three DP's going,
and that's destruction point.
We put each of them there, get all of our stuff ready,
open the boxes, unload whatever munitions for the Eryx
missiles, place them in the hole and get ready to put our
charges on when they're prepared.
After we get our hole set up, we go and get our demolition
stores, so our C4, our det cord.
We'll take our blocks of C4 how many ever we need and wrap
them with the det cord and then place them on the items,
tape it down nice and good.
Then, we tape all the leads of the det cord up and we call
it a trunk line.
And then, put it towards our escape route.
After we have everything ready, we get our fuse ready.
We have to cut off three feet, burn it; figure out what
the burn rate is.
Then, we have to figure out our walk time, or right now it
would be our drive time.
And, we do a lot of calculations to find out what our
minimum length required is.
After clearing the area, as soon as he says “Light”; we
light it up; get in the trucks, go; count down our time;
blow it up.
It's a lot of fun.
