New Army commander appointed

OTTAWA, Ontario – The Department of National Defence has announced the appointment of Lieutenant-General Marc Caron as the next Chief of Land Staff. He was promoted January 20 and will replace Lieutenant-General Hillier as the Army's commander February 3.

Brigadier-General Marc Lessard, commander of Land Forces Central Area (LFCA) is to be promoted to the rank of Major-General and replace LGen Caron as Assistant Chief of the Land Staff.

Brigadier-General Greg Young will replace BGen Lessard as the commander of LFCA until summer 2005.

As announced on January 14, Lieutenant-General Rick Hillier will become Chief of the Defence Staff February 4. He will replace General Ray Henault who is taking up the position of Chairman of the Military Committee at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
